Aircraft fall into two broad categories:

A hot air balloon in flight.

Heavier than air aircraft, or aerodynes, include autogyros, helicopters, powered lifts, and conventional fixed-wing aircraft (aeroplanes). Fixed-wing aircraft generally use an internal-combustion engine in the form of a piston engine (with a propeller) or a turbine engine (jet or turboprop), to provide thrust that moves the craft forward through the air. The movement of air over the wings produces lift that causes the aircraft to fly. Exceptions include gliders which have no engines and gain their thrust, initially, from winches or tugs and then from gravity and thermal currents. For a glider to maintain its forward speed it must descend in relation to the air (but not necessarily in relation to the ground). Helicopters and autogyros use a spinning rotor (a rotary wing) to provide lift; helicopters also use the rotor to provide thrust. Gyrodynes are aircraft intermediate between helicopters and autogyros, whose rotor is sometimes powered (often by a jet at its tips) but which do not have a tail rotor. Heliplanes are combination aircraft with both a ro..."

In engineering and manufacturing, the term specification has the following meanings:

A specification is a set of requirements. See also requirements analysis. Normally, a specification is the specific set of requirements agreed to by the sponsor/user and the manufacturer/producer of a system. The specification may also contain both the systems requirements and the test requirements by which it is determined that the systems requirements have been met, known as the acceptance test requirement(s), and a mapping between them.

Specifications in North America form part of the contract documents that accompany and govern the construction of a building. The guiding master document is the National MasterFormat. It is a consensus document that is jointly sponsored by two professional organisations:

    • Construction Specifications Canada
    • Construction Specifications Institute

Generally, "Specs overrule Drawings" in the event of discrepancies between the text document and the drawings.

The Specifications fall into 16 "Divisions", or broad categories of work involved in construction. The "Divisions" are subdivided into "Sections", that address specific workscopes. For instance, firestopping is addressed in Section 07840 - Firestopping. It forms part of the Division 7, which is Thermal and Moisture Protection. Division 7 also addresses building envelope and fireproofing work. Each Section is subdivided into three distinct areas: "General", "Products" and "Installation". The National MasterFormat system has been uniformly applied to residential, commercial and much though not all industrial work.

Specifications can be either "performance-based", whereby the specifier restricts the text to stating the performance that must ..."
